Young Justice Reviews: Episodes 9-12

I had enough time this weekend to watch four episodes of Young Justice, which brings us t nearly the halfway point of the first season.

What's interesing about the first half of the season is that it's setting the table for the main arc of the season -- we get additional clues about who is part of The Light while left wondering what some of the moves they make will lead to. Then it's the second half of the season when the bigger storyline starts to kick into gear.

Along the way, we watch as the young heroes who make up The Team mature and grow as heroes and as people.

But let's look at the next four episodes and see how they build to what's to come down the road.

Episode 9: Bereft

The plot: The Team is stranded in Bialya, their memories of the past six months gone, and Miss Martian must determine what happened and how to get The Team back together.

Key elements: More clues about the background of Miss Martian and Artemis, the introduction of Queen Bee, Psimon and the Sphere.

Favorite quote: This exchange between Kid Flash and Artemis, when their memories of the past six months had been wiped out:
Kid Flash: Hey, it's okay. It's okay. I won't hurt you. I'm one of the good guys. You know, Kid Flash.
Artemis: Seen Kid Flash on the news. He doesn't wear black.
Kid Flash: A little unclear on that myself.

Episode thoughts: Miss Martian takes center stage, as she must restore her memory and those of The Team, so they can remember why they were sent to Bialya. But it forces Miss Martian to make a choice to rescue Superboy and leads to her first confrontation with Psimon, in which we learn just how powerful she can be. And we get another clue as to who is part of The Light, though it remains unclear what their plan is.

Episode 10: Targets

The plot: Red Arrow unwittingly must protect Lex Luthor from the League of Shadows as Luthor seeks to negotiate a treaty between North and South Rhelasia.

Key elements: The first apperances of Lex Luthor and Ra's al Guhl, the introduction of Karen Beecher and Mal Duncan, the first hints of a mole within The Team.

Favorite quote: From Lex Luthor: "I never claimed to be an angel. It just so happens that, this time, I'm on the side of the angels."

Episode thoughts: The focus is mostly on Red Arrow, who refuses to call upon The Team for help until it's clear that he's outmatched against Sportsmaster and Cheshire. Though Red Arrow doesn't join The Team, he admits that he respects what The Team does and will back them when needed. We get our first insight into Lex Luthor, who takes more of an antihero stance, doing whatever happens to be in his best interest -- and, it turns out, the best interest of The Light, given the revelations at the end of the episode. There's also a subplot focusing on Superboy and Miss Martian and their relationship as they started their first day of school in Happy Harbor.

Episode 11: Terrors

The plot: Superboy and Miss Martian, disguised as The Terror Twins, go undercover into Belle Reve Penitentiary to uncover a plot to break every prisoner out.

Key elements: The introduction of Hugo Strange, the continued development of the relationship between Superboy and Miss Martian.

Favorite quote: This exchange between Superboy and Tommy Terror.
Tommy: I just gone toe to toe with Superman!
Superboy: Congratulations. That's more quality time than he's ever given me.

Episode thoughts: Most of the episode focuses on the Superboy-Miss Martian relationship, but there are plot points that build toward The Light's plans, ranging from a changing of the guard in the Belle Reve warden position to why multiple ice villains have sought to be housed at Belle Reve. The latter ties back to the first episode, in which four ice villains staged separated attacks on the same day. It's stuff like this that makes Young Justice such a good series -- a seemingly meaningless element of an episodes has greater ramifications in the season arc.

Episode 12: Homefront

The plot: Robin and Artemis are forced to save the rest of The Team, who have been captured after two super-powered robots take over The Cave.

Key elements: More insight into Artemis' background, clues into Red Tornado's past.

Favorite quote: This exchange between Artemis and Robin.
Artemis: How can you be so calm?
Robin: Practice. I've been doing this since I was nine.

Episode thoughts: Artemis takes center stage, both regarding revelations into her background -- we now know she had an older sister, one who happens to be working for the League of Shadows. We also find out how good Artemis can be in devising a plan to overcome the two super-powered robots, a plan inspired by her realization she has found a new family in The Team.
