Young Justice Reviews: Episodes 7-8

Two more episodes of Young Justice reviewed -- at the rate I'm going, perhaps there is a chance that the reviews will be finished before the start of Season 3 in the fall. No pressure. though!

Episode 7: Denial

The plot: The Team is sent by Red Tornado to locate Kent Nelson, caretaker of the Helmet of Fate.

Key elements: Kid Flash learning to go beyond science for his understanding of the world, the building of his relationship with Artemis, the introduction of the Helmet of Fate and Klarion the Witch Boy.

Favorite quote: From Kid Flash: "More like Dr. Fake. Guy knows a little advanced science and Dumbledores it up to scare the bad guys and impress the babes."

Episode thoughts: Kid Flash takes center stage in this episode, in which he only shows an interest in magic to impress Miss Martian, only for his disbelief to be exposed. He has to overcome that disbelief to ensure The Team is successful in defeating Klarion. This start a subplot concerning the Helmet of Fate and how it is sometimes utilized to defeat the villains, at the potential cost of Nabu (Dr. Fate) refusing to relinquish control of a human.

Episode 8: Downtime

The plot: Aqualad is conflicted between leading The Team or continuing the life he left behind in Atlantis, and while there, uncovers a plot by Black Manta to steal a frozen sea creature.

Key elements: The introduction of Black Manta and Starro, background on the lives of Aqualad, Robin, Kid Flash and Artemis, the continued relationship between Superboy and Miss Martian, the teasing of another member of The Light.

Favorite quote: Batman to Aqualad: "The Team performed adequately, the problem was you. You're their leader and your head wasn't in the game."

Episode thoughts: The story revolves around a failed mission thanks to Aqualad's lack of focus, forcing Batman to intervene, after which Batman tells Aqualad he needs to decide what he really wants to do. Along the way, we get bits of information about the relationships the rest of The Team members have outside the superhero life. The episode does a good job revealing these elements, all while building along to the overarching storyline about The Light and its plans.
